Working with an Intentional Plan

Updated: Jul 29, 2019

The Exceptional City

"All successful people are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work everyday toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose."-Brian Tracy

I get asked a lot of questions relating to my work philosophy. I wrote this to share the process behind how I work and live.  The short summary is, I intentionally live my life purpose every day. Daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, long-term goals and milestones are set and measured emphatically.  This may sound like a line out a self-help or goal setting book because it is. In fact, it is a culmination of lines out of the 100’s of books in this genre.

As a young child, I got an early start in learning business management listening to the “One Minute Manager” on the original “Books on Tape,”  real cassettes my father would play in his truck over and over again. At the time I did not appreciate the hours of learning taking place. Now, the circle of life has allowed me to bestow the same learning technique on my children when they are in my SUV.

I felt my purpose is to have a meaningful positive impact on people’s lives.  This feeling has been with me since I was very young. This purpose drove me to find the education I needed to understand how I was going to do that.   Early on I found Zig Ziglar. His statement “Help enough people get what they want, and eventually you get what you want” became the base of everything I do.

Next, I put ideas to paper.  I have always used the S.M.A.R.T. goal method in writing these ideas.  I used Brian Tracy’s goal setting guide to create my life plan at 20. I created a binder with my personal, spiritual, financial, and professional goals. I wrote a mission statement “In being my best, I will have a positive impact on everyone I meet.” I created daily affirmations (still read occasionally now) and studied this binder weekly. Now, my plan is electronic, allowing me to continually update it faster than ever.

Then I began looking for an opportunity.  No matter what I have worked on, I incessantly read anything I could find on the topic.  Then, I reached out to the top professionals in their field and ask them questions. Finally, I seek stakeholders and influencers that are passionate about the same ideas where I am working and see if I can help them with their interests and goals.

My product is made from bricks and mortar, my job is working with people to create the life they want to live.  I use my life plan to hopefully bring ideas of value to others. By working to be a valuable part of the lives of others, I achieve success.  I hope I have years to go in my career, and by continuing this philosophy will create even more successes for those around me.
